Impacts of Job Stress and Job Satisfaction on Depression among Local Public Servants

Abstract
The aims of the present study were; (a) to investigate the relationships between job stress, job satisfaction, and depression; (b) to examine the differences in job stress, job satisfaction, and depression in terms of socio-demographic variables; and (c) to identify predictors of depression in the study participants. 274 study participants were recruited from public servants working in the Daegu Metropolitan City Hall, eight Gu offices in Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do Gyeongsan-si using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a anonymous, self-reporting questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. Pearson correlation analyses among the research variables indicated that the level of depression was negatively correlated with the level of relational conflict, job insecurity, organizational structure, reward among job stress factors. However, the level of depression was positively correlated with the level of job satisfaction. Among socio-demographic variables, depression was significantly associated with age, monthly household income, and service area. In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, relational conflict, job insecurity and reward among job stress factors and job satisfaction were significantly associated with the level of depression. This final model was statistically significant and accounted for 40.6% (adjusted R2; 37.6%) of the variance in the depression. Based on the research finding, the authors suggested the necessity of developing stress management program tailored to job stress factors among local public servants.
